Gifted and Talented Education
There are many gifted and talented education programs developed especially for those that show exceptional skills when it comes to those that have a knack in specific subjects like math and science. Most students undergo testing at a young to determine high aptitude scores that can later be used to help educators place students in advanced classes. This is to help those that have special talents use them so that they do not get bored with subjects that are too easy for them since many students that are bright if not harnessed early on can end up getting into trouble simply because they find school boring.
Therefore, if you suspect that your child is gifted and may need to be in gifted and talented education, have him or she tested early so that they can be placed at the proper level to help challenge them. School is a learning experience but it should also engage the student as well as offer a challenge for their minds, if it doesn’t, then they may be bored and end up not being all they can be. Most parents love to have their child in a gifted or talented and often brag about it to friends and family members, but be careful with this is you have one child that is in gifted and the other is not, because the one that is not may begin to feel left out, which can affect them later.
Keep in mind that gifted and talented education programs are only designed for those children that actually score high on various tests that are given to them. If you have a gifted child that does not test well, it may not reflect that they are truly talented. If you suspect this may be the case, you can have more individualized tests performed outside of the school system so that you can know for sure. It doesn’t mean that your child is better if they test gifted, it just means that you need to have them in the proper classes so that their minds are challenged in school.
Many students are in some gifted classes and then some regular classes depending on their test scores. There are some schools that are designed only for gifted and talented education, which are in the United States and other countries as well. These gifted schools are a way that children of likeminded academics can come together and learn to interact with others, which can prove very useful as the child moves on to college and then later into their chosen professions. Separate gifted and talented education schools are more expensive than public schools that have different gifted courses, so it will depend on the child’s parent’s income if the child should attend a separate school or attend some gifted classes in the public school system.
