I remember when I was 8. My friends and I were discussing what we want to be when we grew up. I have always wanted to be a dentist, while all my fiends who happen to be boys wanted to be scientists or astronauts. I distinctly remember my friend Abbygaile, who wanted to be a Psychologist.
We grew up, fell apart, and I learned years later that Abbygaile married her highschool sweetheart and was working as… an accountant. We finally had time to catch up and had coffee.
It was the usual story – she married young, had kids, and had to get to work. She took up short accounting courses and was finally accepted at a small auditing firm. She got a license and was now working as an auditor. They weren’t exactly poor – they were able to pay off most of their student loans and was left with just the mortgage to pay off. But she realized she wasn’t necessarily living her dream of becoming a Psychologist.
But, she mentioned, she is on the road to becoming one. She had been taking classes – Masters Degree in Psychology. She warned me though that it wasn’t easy – some times she would have to skip classes especially tax season. So she would have to find time to start studying again. It also helped that she did take up a healthcare administration degree in college. A few more years, she said, and she’d be taking up online psyd programs.
People like Abbygaile have been slowly fulfilling their dreams thanks to online programs. Not only that, but many people get to be more skilled nowadays, enabling them to take on part time jobs, if time permits it. Also, there is a great need for pyschologists in the country today. Thanks to online psyd programs, there are more skilled psychologists nowadays.
If you have been hoping to become a doctor of Psychology, be sure to do your research. Some cities and states require you to pursue your degree from reputable online universities. Also, do a quick research on the online schools themselves – speed and cost does not necessarily equate to quality. Some online psyd programs may only require you to do a short hands on training and submit a thesis to defend. But do you think this is enough to help you learn and give you what it takes to become an effective psychologist?
So before you embark on your journey the way Abbygaile did, be sure you have the guts to stay on studying. You need to have the willpower to stay focused on what is on your computer and to veer away from social networking sites. It’s not going to be easy, but it will definitely be worth it.
