Can Elite Higher Education Reform Itself?

April 25, 2025 By admin

In recent years, elite higher education has been rocked by concerns about politicization, campus intolerance, and declining academic rigor. The Trump administration has moved aggressively to address these issues, levying unprecedented financial penalties on high-profile institutions. How should leading universities respond? And are they willing and able to address the problems without Washington stepping in?

Two organizations that have been in the middle of things are the Stand Columbia Society and the 1636 Forum, which were formed by alumni of Columbia and Harvard, respectively, and are seeking to reform these institutions from the inside. Join Frederick M. Hess as he talks to the founders of Stand Columbia and the 1636 Forum about problems on campus, the challenges ahead, and what leaders need to do now.

Rebuilding Higher Education Finance: Reform Through Reconciliation

March 20, 2025 By admin

Higher education finance is facing a critical juncture. The Biden administration’s push for student debt cancellation has significantly disrupted the financial landscape, creating uncertainty and exposing the system’s flaws. As lawmakers debate the future of higher education finance, one key question is how the budget reconciliation process—a fast-track legislative tool that allows certain fiscal policies to pass with a simple Senate majority—can drive lasting change.

In this web event, AEI’s Beth Akers will moderate a discussion with Alex Ricci of the Education Finance Council, Lindsey M. Burke of The Heritage Foundation, and AEI’s Preston Cooper. Together, they will explore the potential for meaningful and lasting reform through budget reconciliation legislation, focusing on both the opportunities and hurdles ahead.

Empowering parents and voters for K–12 education reform

March 15, 2025 By admin

Over the last decade, education reformers have fought tooth and nail over school choice policy. Although choice advocates have scored numerous policy victories at the state and district levels, schooling has hardly been revolutionized, even in areas with school choice programs. The uneven effect of charter schooling and voucher programs can in part be explained by the fact that school choice is not enough.

We welcome you to join us at AEI as Andrew P. Kelly and Jon Valant discuss two new pieces of research on parent empowerment and K–12 education reform. They will emphasize that families must be able to comprehend the choices they are presented with to understand and navigate the complex education landscape.

Senate HELP Committee Chairman Lamar Alexander on higher education reform | LIVE STREAM

December 9, 2024 By admin

It has been over a decade since Congress last reauthorized the Higher Education Act, which covers the federal government’s major student aid programs, such as Pell Grants and student loans. Much has changed in the nation’s higher education system, making federal student aid programs and the countless rules and regulations they contain overdue for reform.
Please join Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-TN) for keynote remarks on the committee’s agenda for reforming the Higher Education Act. Following his remarks, Chairman Alexander will join AEI’s Jason D. Delisle for a conversation about this new legislation. The event will conclude with a panel discussion featuring higher education experts who will share their insights about the proposal.
