Cuts at the Department of Education could hit vulnerable students hard

July 17, 2025 By admin

President Trump’s plan to downsize the Department of Education could mean nearly 1,400 employees there will lose their jobs.

A downsized Department of Education could have major impacts for students who attend public schools and universities in the U.S.

The agency, created in 1979, helps to distribute financial aid, support special education and protect students’ civil rights.

The Trump administration, though, claims those initiatives won’t go away.

“It is not the president’s goal to defund the programs. It is only to have it operate more efficiently,” said Education Secretary Linda McMahon.

But some who work in education worry that students who rely on those programs will suffer without the department operating at full force.

Trump’s education reform will backfire on Republicans

March 23, 2025 By admin

“His voters are going to wake up to this.”

Trump’s reforms to the department of education will negatively impact red states who are “more dependent on federal funding”, says former assistant secretary for communications and outreach in the U.S. Department of Education Peter Cunningham.

Will Donald Trump eliminate the Department of Education?

November 15, 2024 By admin

As President-elect Donald Trump assembles his transition team and appoints members to his Cabinet, there are growing rumors that he plans to eliminate the federal Department of Education.

If Trump did get rid of the Education Department, how would it happen and what would change?

The Department of Education was formed in 1980 under President Jimmy Carter. It’s in charge of collecting data for American schools, establishing federal policies, distributing federal funds and administering federal student loans and financial aid.

Trump has long vowed to eliminate the department. During his first term, he proposed merging the Education and Labor departments. However, the plan never got off the ground and the departments remain separate. #Politics #News #Trump #Education

Education reform in the 114th Congress: A conversation with Representative John Kline

June 8, 2024 By admin

With both the US House of Representatives and Senate under unified Republican control, the question of what Republican leaders hope to accomplish in the 114th Congress is timely and important. During this AEI event, Representative John Kline (R-MN), chairman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, will discuss the need to replace the No Child Left Behind Act and strengthen higher education, outline his education reform priorities, and challenge the Obama administration and both parties in Congress to work in good faith to improve education for all Americans.

Education reform, conservative style

May 7, 2024 By admin

Historically, conservatives have ceded the work of education reform to progressives. But, as Congress begins to consider proposals to reauthorize NCLB/No Child Left Behind (the latest iteration of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act), education is ripe for conservatives to offer an alternative.

Rather than talking about what conservatives are against, conservatives should be talking about what they are for. By identifying what the federal government has the potential to do right, we can begin to sketch a principled, coherent approach to education, one which allows Washington to promote the kind of great schooling that America’s kids need.
