He believes if this country is to become a high performing education system, that outcome is not satisfactory.

The Australian Education Act will be introduced to Parliament by the end of this year, and will spell out the Government’s aspirations for Australian schools being back in the top 5 schooling systems across the globe by 2025.

Julia Gillard, former prime minister of Australia and currently a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, sat down with her colleagues at the Center for Universal Education to discuss trends and opportunities in global education.
In Australia, Gillard involved the two teacher unions in discussions with the government. Good faith discussions and developing trust were key to education reform.
Iowa has moved from being a national leader in education to being among the average over the past two decades. In response to this downward trend in Iowa’s standing, Governor Terry Branstad called for an education summit to discuss ideas with business and education leaders and teachers on what can be done to make Iowa an educational leader again. On July 25 and 26, in Des Moines, various speakers, including New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Asia Society Senior Advisor, Vivien Stewart, spoke at the Iowa Education Summit to share their ideas for education reform.
