Cuts at the Department of Education could hit vulnerable students hard

July 17, 2025 By admin

President Trump’s plan to downsize the Department of Education could mean nearly 1,400 employees there will lose their jobs.

A downsized Department of Education could have major impacts for students who attend public schools and universities in the U.S.

The agency, created in 1979, helps to distribute financial aid, support special education and protect students’ civil rights.

The Trump administration, though, claims those initiatives won’t go away.

“It is not the president’s goal to defund the programs. It is only to have it operate more efficiently,” said Education Secretary Linda McMahon.

But some who work in education worry that students who rely on those programs will suffer without the department operating at full force.

Texas teachers came to the Capitol to meet with Texas legislators and staff during the 88th Legislative Session as part of Raise Your Hand Texas’ Teacher Advocacy Days. A total of 75 teachers from regions across the state traveled to Austin to visit with Texas lawmakers and share their expertise while advocating for a profession in crisis. We are committed to providing opportunities for educators to engage in advocacy and to amplify their voices in the policy arena. YSF: Florida Education Reform

March 12, 2025 By admin

The latest in the fight for education reform in Florida is pitting traditional public schools against publicly funded – but privately owned – charter schools. The new bill signed into law last week by Governor Rick Scott includes a controversial provision mandating funding for charter schools- more than $400 million earmarked for public schools, will now be shared with charter schools as well. We take a closer look at what this new legislation will mean for students and get reactions from superintendents in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
