Education reform in the 114th Congress: A conversation with Representative John Kline

June 8, 2024 By admin

With both the US House of Representatives and Senate under unified Republican control, the question of what Republican leaders hope to accomplish in the 114th Congress is timely and important. During this AEI event, Representative John Kline (R-MN), chairman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, will discuss the need to replace the No Child Left Behind Act and strengthen higher education, outline his education reform priorities, and challenge the Obama administration and both parties in Congress to work in good faith to improve education for all Americans.

Education reform, conservative style

May 7, 2024 By admin

Historically, conservatives have ceded the work of education reform to progressives. But, as Congress begins to consider proposals to reauthorize NCLB/No Child Left Behind (the latest iteration of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act), education is ripe for conservatives to offer an alternative.

Rather than talking about what conservatives are against, conservatives should be talking about what they are for. By identifying what the federal government has the potential to do right, we can begin to sketch a principled, coherent approach to education, one which allows Washington to promote the kind of great schooling that America’s kids need.

Education Reform And The ‘Fantasy Economy’ | Neil Kraus | TMR

Neil Kraus then joins, diving right into the fantasy of the neoliberal consensus that has reshaped the economy, and our education system, in the interests of corporations and the wealthy, exploring, in particular, how it has manufactured an antagonistic relationship between the public and our education system. Expanding on this, Professor Kraus tackles the myths that the political class has perpetrated against education, pinning the blame on the system for everything from employment and wages to failing industry, before stepping back to tackle the failures of these myths, and how they obscure the role of general economic conditions. After assessing the neoliberal-libertarian coalition in the attack on public and higher education, Neil, Sam, and Emma discuss whether we are at the end of the neoliberal consensus, and what it will take to swing the political fight over education.
