Empowering parents and voters for K–12 education reform

March 15, 2025 By admin

Over the last decade, education reformers have fought tooth and nail over school choice policy. Although choice advocates have scored numerous policy victories at the state and district levels, schooling has hardly been revolutionized, even in areas with school choice programs. The uneven effect of charter schooling and voucher programs can in part be explained by the fact that school choice is not enough.

We welcome you to join us at AEI as Andrew P. Kelly and Jon Valant discuss two new pieces of research on parent empowerment and K–12 education reform. They will emphasize that families must be able to comprehend the choices they are presented with to understand and navigate the complex education landscape.

Republican Presidential Candidates Address Education Reform at NH Summit

December 17, 2024 By admin

How would you fix the education system in America? Is more testing and centralized standards the solution? Or should states have more say in setting goals for students?

At an education summit in New Hampshire, Republican presidential candidates outlined their vision to fix the elementary and secondary education system in America. A common theme among the GOP hopeful was how student achievement should be measured and how education standards should be set.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, whose support of Common Core education standards has put him at odds with his Republican competitors, said that testing standards should be driven by the states. “We have way too many standards. They’re not high. They’re not clear and transparent, and the net result is that we are un-tethered,” Bush said. “This should not be federally driven. The federal government should have nothing to say with this.”

Former HP CEO Carly Fiorina took aim at Common Core and the testing companies that influence what students are taught. “Common Core…is becoming a set of standards, not on what a kid has to learn, but instead on how a teacher has to teach and how a student should learn,” Fiorina said. “That kind of standardization is going to drive achievement down, not up.”

June 8, 2024 By admin

With both the US House of Representatives and Senate under unified Republican control, the question of what Republican leaders hope to accomplish in the 114th Congress is timely and important. During this AEI event, Representative John Kline (R-MN), chairman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, will discuss the need to replace the No Child Left Behind Act and strengthen higher education, outline his education reform priorities, and challenge the Obama administration and both parties in Congress to work in good faith to improve education for all Americans.
