The Media & Education News
Just like everything else, there is some good and bad within the media. The same thing can be said about when they report on education news. There are some people that believe that the media is overplaying the state of the education system when they report on it. While there is another camp of people that believe the media is not doing enough. By placing an overemphasis on the problems within a vital area within a country, the media might be contributing to making the situation worse. For example, if teachers and students hear that members of the education board are lazy, they might believe so. This can decrease the relationship between the board and teachers and trickle down to hurting the relationships between teachers and students.
Like it was previously stated, there is some good education news being reported. When the results are released for national exams, the media is quick to do stories on students that have down extremely well or defied disabilities to succeed within education. However, might seem that the positive things being done is only spoken about for a short time before it is back to the negative aspects of education.
Negative News
Anyone within the media can tell you that stories that invoke an emotion will always make good news. Even when the emotion might be outrage or anger, it can give total strangers something to talk about or a cause to fight for. When the news leads to scaring people, emotion is invoked again and the person will keep tuning in to see if the situations improve so they can release the tension they feel. These scare tactics can lead to more people mistrusting those who work in education, the key decision-makers or the system as a whole. So before the bad situation has a chance to improve, if it is really bad at all, it may get worse.
If you speak to those who are against the media, they will tell you that the current education news does not reflect the reality that the teachers and decision-makers have to deal with in a classroom or boardroom setting. Instead, they would prefer that the media focus more on what areas are being done to improve the education system instead of magnifying the areas within the system that are the weakest.
Positive News
There are instances in which the media should highlight a scandal or unsafe conditions in a school setting, especially if the public has a right to know. However, it is more encouraging for teaching faculty and students to highlight those areas where a difference is being made. This can be in art, sports or community service. The public would feel better knowing that the local basketball team was able to make state champions, instead of any other dismal news. It is in these situations.
