International Education – Studying Abroad

Have you ever wanted to travel abroad to expand your college education? These days more and more students are optioning for this choice. Usually the school where they are presently attending will have a joint program with a school in another country that allows the student to study abroad for one – two semesters. You will also have to transfer your credits will transfer back to their original school.

Moreover, a student might want to get an entire college degree in another country. When a person goes for this choice, there is more that goes into the preparation of it. For starters, the student must apply, interview, and actually get accepted at the educational institution abroad and it can be quite competitive depending on the location and the college you are attending. There also may be aptitude tests that need to be passed before being accepted. If the main language isn’t English, it is usually required for a person to be fluent in the country’s native language as well.

International education is more than just a college student going overseas. There is a similar program for high school students. It is usually called a foreign exchange student program; where the student will stay in a “host home” for the entire duration of their stay in the foreign country. These usually last a year, and are typically reserved for students who get well above average grades. The year that they spend in the foreign country will count towards their high school credits, so they can graduate with the rest of their classmates. This is a very special program that many students seek out as a way to get their feet wet with traveling to other countries.

If you already have your teaching certification, there are countless opportunities for international education for those interested in teaching in other countries besides their own. The job slots open to teach children in other countries such as teaching the English language, along with other subjects as well. Teaching in third world countries is in very high demand, because of the extreme shortage of instructors in those nations. This is often a once in a lifetime experience for many people, and they will usually return home completely changed because they realize how much of an impact they made on the child’s life that probably would not have had the chance to have an education.

International education offers countless learning and teaching opportunities. The chance to experience another one’s culture and to discover how others live can make for an exhilarating experience. With that said it’s not for everyone. To take on something like this, you need a strong sense of self, coupled with an open mind that there are different cultures with a totally different lifestyle, mindset, and system of beliefs.
