Special Needs Education
Regardless if you are an educator wanting to teach special needs education or a parent with a special needs child, both work together to meet the needs of children with needs so that they too can enjoy an education. In the early days of special needs education, the focus was on what the child could not do rather than what he or she was capable of doing. Moreover, education for teachers to teach such special needs was limited and most did so out of compassion not real training.
Even in the early part of the 20th-century children that were given diagnosis were separated and treated as different or disabled, which of course was not good for the children. It was not until 1944 that education reform began to take place, which also effective special needs education. The reform, while making some provisions for special needs children also focused on what the child could not do rather what he or she was capable of, so the education system still had a long way to go.
However, laws began changing as the attitudes of parents began changing and recognizing that their special needs child was capable of a lot more than the state was giving them credit for. Most private schools in the later part of the 20th century had some type of special education, but public schools were still far behind and still concentrated on the disability rather than the ability of the child.
Today, children with disabilities and special needs are no longer treated like outcasts and more programs have been developed in both the private and public sector to concentrate on what the child can do rather than what he or she is not able to do. Moreover, teachers today specialize in special education with the full intent of making the lives of students with special needs better and offering them a full education. There are multitudes of resources available to parents, the child, and educators today concerning special needs and how it fits into education.
In the past, special needs were those children that clearly had handicaps, but today, many students are in special needs programs due to behavior issues, disabilities, and both can and do receive a full education. Students today have a chance of advancing and being independent whereas in the in the past this simply was not possible due to the restrictions that society placed on children with special needs. Today, truly education is for regardless of special needs, race, religion, or sex, an education is there for the taking for all that want it. Those that need assistance or help will find many ways in which teachers and schools have programs to help give each child an education.
